MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III has declared a national day of celebration on October 21, when the Vatican will formally recognize a Visayan teenager as the second Filipino saint. Aquino said the Philippines will honor the "life and martyrdom" of the 18-year-old Pedro Calungsod, as Pope Benedict XVI elevates the 17th century martyr to the sainthood. Based on Catholic teaching, the canonization ritual will recognize that Calungsod is now in heaven, and is worthy to be made a church-wide model of holiness. The local Catholic Church considers him a model for missionaries and catechists, as well as young people like him. In his Presidential Proclamation No. 481, Aquino said Calungsod's canonization “shall instill national pride in the hearts of Filipinos worldwide.” “The life and martyrdom of Blessed Calungsod shall serve as an inspiration to Filipinos, particularly the youth to live a life anchored on values and principles,” the proclamation said.
